Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej Now Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born 12 November 1961. She was the first Romanian to score a of 10 in the Olympic contest. Comaneci was spotted by Bela Karolyi, later to be the Romanian gymnastics coach when she was six years old. She first competed in the junior national championships in 1969, finishing 13th. She took the title in the year 1970. At her first international competition, which was an preolympics junior event for countries in the Communist bloc, she won 3 gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1975, she won awarded the All-around Junior Champion. In 1975, she took home 4 gold and 1 silver medal in her debut senior international contest. Lyudmila Torishcheva was a five-time European champion. She was the first woman ever to perform a backwards double salto while dismounting from an uneven parallel bar.
